The Transformation of Now. The fine art of change
(Lees de Nederlandse versie van deze Face to Face)
One version of a well-known piece of management wisdom from a few decades back is “the most effective method for dealing with transformation is to create it yourself.” This statement is just as true these days, but in a radically different context. Not only are the circumstances different; the objective of transformation has changed, as well as the way in which transformation is effected.
Ever since the creation of the very first organisational forms, people have been continually trying to effect change in order to improve performance. That has not changed. Still, the context in which transformations take place is radically different from the prevailing context a few years ago. In his now quite well-known book The World is Flat, Thomas Friedman outlines the consequences of the flattening of the world. The intermittent progression that countries such as China and India are making in the social, economic and technological domains are resulting in large-scale shifts of activities to these regions.
