Hackathon Weekend 2016

  • February 4, 2016 tot February 6, 2016
  • Hajé Hotel Heerenveen, Friesland

After a very successful second edition, we are happy to welcome you all to the next edition: Hackathon Weekend 2016 - Artificial Intelligence.

On this site you will find more information about the event, such as the time and place, the rules, the teams, and you will have the opportunity to sign up for the event.
Of course we hope you will all participate. Please read through the site before signing up. See you all there!

Due to popularity, we will soon be reaching the maximum number of participants! Note that registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis. Once the hotel is full, we can not accept any more registrations.

The weekend is a 48 hours non-stop coding challenge (a.k.a. hackathon). During this time, various teams will battle each other and strive to develop the best and most innovative ideas into working products.

The event will take place in a hotel where you will be accommodated with a place to work and sleep (if you really must). This will involve wifi, lots of caffeine, breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, games and other necessities to keep you going for 48 hours.

At the end of the challenge, a jury will pick a winner and a great prize will be given to your entire team. “There can be only one”, so make sure it’s your team! The event will be concluded with music and drinks.

The theme of this year's Hackathon Weekend is: Artificial Intelligence. To provide contestants with cool stuff to play and code with, we cooperated with IBM to give you access to the IBM Bluemix environment and IBM Watson services to build cool apps!

Check out IBM Bluemix and IBM Watson to learn more about it so you can come up with great ideas to use during the weekend!

Time and Place

The weekend kicks off on Thursday, the 4th of February 2016 at 18:00 at the Hajé Hotel Heerenveen in Friesland. The contest runs until the 6st of February... exactly 48 hours later. After that, the evening program then runs until around 22:00.

What's the deal on Friday?

Good question. For employees from the following units within Capgemini this has been arranged:

  • Financial Services
  • Digital Customer Experience
  • Custom Software Development & Integration
  • Custom Software Development Application Outsourcing

Employees from other practices / BUs will have to discuss this day with their manager.

Everybody! Just make sure you form a team with people from various disciplines. Doing so will help you overcome challenges you may not be able to overcome when you form a team of just business analysts or only tibco developers. So, make sure you have a nice, multi-disciplinary team.

To enroll, you need to have a Scrum-sized team (between 3 and 9 people). This is in the rules, and is non-negotiable.

However, you are not limited to form a team of your practice. You may also invite people from other SBU’s within Capgemini, the client, or even friends or family who have no connection to Capgemini. As a matter of fact, highly encourage you inviting the client or your friends and family.

So you are interested and want to sign up immediately, right? Well there’s a few things that you need to take care of before you can participate.

* You need to register the names of your Scrum team members

* You need to appoint a team leader

* You need to enter a name for your team

* You need to enter a short description of what you want to develop

Of course, the composition of your team can be changed later… However, the organization wants to know about how many people will be participating.

You have to sign up via this website before the 15th of January (requires Capgemini login).

After the teams have been submitted, the team will be invited to participate in a ‘grooming session’. During this session, the team tell about their plans and the Hackathon organization will try to challenge these plans with the goal to come up with a realistic innovative backlog draft to be used during the Hackathon. This backlog will also be shared with the other teams on this website.

  • Your team size is a Scrum-team size (between 3 and 9 people)
  • Your team participates in all mandatory events at the Hackathon (presentation, physical challenges, quizzes, etc.)
  • You bring your own devices. There are no devices provided for you. You are allowed to bring whatever you want (laptops, extra monitors, google glass, beamers, 3D-printers, etc.)
  • You have to sign up your team before January 15th! Make sure you have a list of team members and ‘idea’ ready you want to work on
  • Your team has taken part in one of the ‘grooming’ sessions before the event.

We highly encourage you to bring guests to the event. We use the weekend to promote Capgemini outside of our organization, so do not shun to invite your colleagues from Capgemini or your previous work, your manager, your co-workers at your client site, your wife and kids, your grandfather, two yorkshire terriers, everybody!

Your guests can actually win bonus-points for your team… so make sure you invite lots. Just make sure you register guests beforehand with the Hackathon organization by sending an email to paul.rispens@capgemini.com
